Star Wars, Ranked

You might’ve heard the latest Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, is finally out in theaters. A lot of people (including myself, initially) aren’t quite sure what to make of it. Fortunately, multiple viewings (absolutely necessary, now more than with any other Star Wars film) and intelligent commentaries (here, here, here, and here) have helped to calm my mind and allow me to appreciate the film for what it is and what it’s trying to accomplish. Who knows how Episode IX will finish the sequel trilogy off, but I suspect the passage of time will only improve VIII’s status within the Saga as people start to come around.

Anyway, with every Star Wars release comes the requisite excersise of updating one’s movie rankings. Here’s my basic, updated order:

  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • A New Hope
  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Last Jedi
  • Rogue One
  • The Force Awakens
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • Attack of the Clones
  • The Phantom Menace

Next, a more accurate ranking that slots each film in relative position to one another to better express how they compare in my mind across a range of critical and nostalgic factors:

  • The Empire Strikes Back

  • A New Hope

  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Last Jedi

  • Rogue One

  • The Force Awakens

  • Revenge of the Sith

  • Attack of the Clones
  • The Phantom Menace

Lastly, here’s a ranking based (admittedly vaguely) on how cool and exciting and fun I’ve found the films growing up as a child who discovered Star Wars in the early 1990s. I was nine years old when the Special Editions were re-released in theaters, so the franchise’s revival hit me right in the adolescent sweet spot. Here you go:

  • Return of the Jedi
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • Attack of the Clones
  • Rogue One
  • The Last Jedi
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Phantom Menace
  • A New Hope

The Han Solo standalone film, which in my mind will forever be called the Untitled Han Solo Film, comes out in barely five months. That seems insane, especially given all the chaos surrounding the movie’s production. I’m keeping my expectations tempered. Oh well. When it does launch, I’ll be back to continue the fan rite of passage and update my rankings once more.
